Mah Jong Vase
2025
The surface is adorned with a carved illustration depicting an intimate mahjong game: elongated figures leaning over a curved table, hands reaching for tiles and dice under the glow of a single hanging lamp, the pieces circling the body of the vase in a rhythmic sequence, celebrating the everyday vibrancy of Hong Kong’s local culture.
This vase is part of a larger collection titled Fragments of HK, where each piece tells a story found while wandering through the streets of Hong Kong. Together, the collection captures a mosaic of the city’s everyday life, scenes that may often go unnoticed but are deeply rich in cultural significance.

Techniques
The vase was constructed using the coiling technique, with blue underglaze applied to the soft ceramic surface. The Mah Jong scene was carefully carved into the ceramic, using contrasting textures to bring the detailed illustration to life.
