Cha Chaan Tang Restaurant

2023

Hand-built in an asymmetric, tapering form, the Cha Cham Tang Restaurant vase is constructed from slabs of Buff stoneware Clay and painted with black underglaze figures that wrap the surface. Stylised bodies, stools, cups, and gestures appear and disappear as the vessel turns, evoking moments of conversation, service, and pause. Drawing from the visual rhythm of Hong Kong’s cha chaan tengs, the imagery distils everyday social rituals into bold marks and silhouettes. The imagery is sealed beneath a transparent glaze, allowing the texture and tone of the clay to remain present.

Part of Fragments of Hong Kong, a series that gathers everyday scenes and objects from the city into tactile studies.

Techniques

The vase was constructed using the slab technique, with individual clay panels joined and refined by hand. Black underglaze was painted directly onto the clay surface before a transparent glaze was applied, fixing the imagery while preserving the warmth and texture of the clay body.
